getting in touch

email is the best way to contact me: cmlim@berklee.edu

please make sure to communicate from your berklee email address whenever you email me about berklee matters.

i receive a high volume of emails, both within and outside of the berklee sphere, so your patience is appreciated with my response.

that said, as a general rule of thumb, the earlier you reach out to me about something (recommendation letter request, homework extension request, question about assignment, office hours inquiry etc.), the better!

my office hours for fall 2024 are tuesdays 5-6pm. please email me at cmlim@berklee.edu to share your inquiry and request for an appointment.

attendance policies

all my courses follow the EPD department attendance policy as a starting point: only 1 absence, regardless of the reason, is permitted before your final grade is affected. subsequent absences will result in the lowering of a grade level for your final grade.

however, i know things happen (because life!). so in my classes, you get 2 absences, regardless of the reason, before your final grade is affected.

for example, if your overall grade at the end of the semester is at a B+ standard, but you had 4 absences, your final grade for the semester will be a B- (B+ lowered to B for the 3rd absence, B lowered to B- for the 4th absences).

late arrivals / early departures

it is to your advantage to arrive at class on time, so that you can prepare yourself for the start of the lesson and set up for any class performances or discussions. any lost prep/setup time that results because of a late arrival is forfeited, meaning you won't get extra time to prepare for class.

that said, i know folks (myself included) may need to run between berklee buildings for back-to-back classes. as such, there is a grace period of 5 minutes for anyone to arrive slightly late, if they need to.

during these 5 minutes, i'll play some music and/or leave the classroom door open. once the music stops and/or i shut the classroom door, anyone who arrives after that will formally be marked as late.

2 late arrivals and/or early departures, regardless of the reason, will add up to 1 absence, and will count towards the attendance policy.

for example, if your overall grade at the end of the semester is at a B+ standard, but you had 2 absences + 1 late arrival + 1 early departure, your final grade for the semester will be a B (B+ lowered to B for the 3rd absence, which resulted from a combined 1 late arrival and 1 early departure).

grading policies

assignments that are submitted punctually before the due date will be eligible for full credit (e.g. a submission at an A standard that is submitted on time will receive an A grade).

assignments that are submitted late will still be eligible for credit - just partial credit, as there will be a late penalty. because of this, beyond a certain number of days, the maximum grade that can be awarded is a 50% grade (F, but with some credit).

in summary:

  • timely work, submitted before due date: full credit grade with

  • late work, submitted up to 10 days late: partial credit grade (i.e. grade with late penalty)

  • late work, submitted 10 days or more late: maximum F grade of 50%
